Las Vegas breaks homicide records

Sin City had its deadliest year in decades. In 2017, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department investigated 229 homicides.

Even excluding the 58 Vegas Massacre murders, the remaining 171 deaths exceed last year’s murder tally of 168.

Baltimore has also seen a significant increase in homicides since last year.

City Homicides in 2017
Las Vegas 229
Los Angeles 281
Chicago 650
Baltimore 343
Washington, D.C. 113
New York City 290

Meanwhile, New York, L.A., Washington, D.C., and Chicago have experienced decreases in the number of homicides this past year. Authorities attribute the declining murder rates in NYC, L.A. and Chicago to new police technology that monitors gun violence and uses algorithms to predict crime hotspots.
