Live Scan fingerprinting uses digital technology instead of ink. Live Scan fingerprints taken in Las Vegas get immediately transferred to the Department of Justice (DOJ). The DOJ then uses the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) to run background checks and retrieve the person’s criminal record (if any).
Who needs to get Live Scan fingerprints?
Anyone who gets arrested is required to submit to Live Scan fingerprinting at the booking station. The DOJ will then compare the prints to existing records and inform the police of the results.

It is a type of background check. Certainly, not all background checks require fingerprint samples.
Will getting a record seal also seal past fingerprints?
Yes. Nevada’s Criminal History Records Repository keeps all fingerprint cards until it receives a court order to seal a person’s record.
