4. Is there an alternative to paying fines?

The judge usually permits defendants to do community service instead. One hour of service shaves $10 off the fine. But defendants need the judge’s permission prior to doing community service.

5. Do I have to go to court for a traffic ticket?

If the traffic ticket says the letter G on the back, then yes. Otherwise, defendants can skip court if they pay the fine (bail amount) by the deadline. Note that doing traffic school does not reduce the fine, but it will cause the charge to be reduced to a non-moving violation with no demerit points.

6. What happens if I miss a required hearing date?

Defendants who miss a required criminal court appearance will have a bench warrant issued for their arrest. If this happens, defendants can hire an attorney to file a motion to quash the warrant. The judge will then hold a hearing on the matter. Judges usually agree to recall bench warrants as long as the defendant does not have a long history of missing court.

Note that missing a civil court appearance – such as small claims – will not cause a bench warrant to issue. But it may cause the judge to hand down a default judgment against the absentee party.

7. Do I still need to come to court if I do not live in Nevada?

Out-of-state defendants are held to the same standard as locals and must attend required court appearances. 8. How do I get a public defender?

12. How soon can I seal my records?

If the charge gets dismissed, right away. But if the case ends with a conviction, then there is a waiting period. And certain serious convictions may never be sealed.

The record seal process takes nearly a year and requires extensive paperwork. A lawyer is recommended to manage the procedure.
